Witch What! Pisces Mercury Retrograde

Mercury Retrograde in the sign of Pisces will heighten our dreamlike states- causing confusion, fog, and an aimless sense of wandering through our material realities. The disillusion of Pisces will be translated through Mercury’s communication sectors. Communication, travel, and just about anything in our day-to-day lives may be veiled by confusion and weariness. Stay strong witches- remember to remain grounded, communicate clearly, and reflect on your actions and emotions.

Mystic Melodies – Pisces

Pisces are governed by a duality, a struggle of the spiritual soul within the physical body. Pisces are deeply creative and artistic, with enhanced intuitive abilities. Ruled by Neptune, planet of inspiration and imagination, Pisceans are one of the most creative signs of the Zodiac, making them some of the world’s greatest musicians. Since Pisces begins in February, we are going to celebrate Black History Month and highlight some incredible Pisces artists who have paved, inspired or changed music history.

First up, the ultimate queen herself; Nina Simone. Nina Simone was one of the foremost singer/songwriters and Civil Rights activists of her generation, revolutionizing the music genre, as well as, the African-American voice through her protests and perseverance. She faced many challenges in the industry as a black female artist and she had to overcome many setbacks in her rise to fame. One of her most politically charged songs is “Mississippi Goddam” which was banned in many US southern states….(go figure). She wrote the song after the white supremacist terrorists bombed a Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four black girls who had just finished Bible study. In the song, Simone expresses her anger at both the bombing and the assassination of civil rights leader, Medgar Evers, by a Klansman in Mississippi three months before. Her lyrics:
“All I want is equality for my sister, my brother, my people and me…
You don’t have to live next to me,
Just give me my equality!” ….
expressed through her voice and lyrics, we hear a call to protest and a demand for change-

Second….queen, Erykah Badu. Badu is an award-winning singer and songwriter who has been hailed as one of the most gifted rhythm and blues singers of the current era. Badu has earned her title as the Queen of neo-soul; a mix of modern soul and R&B with influences from hip-hop, jazz, pop, African music, and beyond. For decades she has been an inspiration; Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Janelle Monáe and even Grimes have all, at some point, referenced or collaborated with her (just to name a few).
Through her music she has been dubbed to have coined the term “woke/wokeness” before it resurfaced and became popular like it is today. In 2012, Badu produced a Radio Series on BBC that explored music generated by The Black Power Movement.

Aquarius season started strong with a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in the sign of Leo. The Full Moon in Leo, the opposite sign of Aquarius, kindled our fiery egos calling upon the goddess in all of us to shine. The full Moon Eclipse highlighted the dark side of our lunar selves and ignited the theme of this Aquarius season…powerful and transformative female energy.

With our inner most selves highlighted at the beginning of Aquarius season, we were called upon the cosmic gods to analyze our most intimate selves. Who are we? And what are we to become?

Aquarius season will help us find those answers. Curiosity, intellect and rebellious natures feel most organic to us now. Use the power of this air sign to be original, seek the unpredictable in all circumstances, experiment and invent with the power of your mind, and be aloof, live amongst the stars, planets, and otherworldly spheres. Mystic Melodies – Aquarius

The super blood “wolf” lunar eclipse in Leo that took place early on the morning of the 21st is just one reason the beginning of Aquarius season is off to a powerful start. If you had the chance to witness the eclipse you could feel the magic taking place in the sky, whether you identify with being spiritual or not. We hope this month’s Mystic Melody will have that same effect on you.

If you have not heard about Sampa The Great you are in for a real treat, and if you have, then you understand why she is being featured in this month’s edition. She is a Zambian poet, singer-songwriter and rapper that creates empowering messages through her songs and lyricism. Although her sign is unknown, a lot of her songs and poetry resonates with the Aquarius archetype, i.e. the Helper of Humanity, the Teacher, the Philosopher and the independent Freedom Fighter. Her newest song and music video “Energy feat. Nadeem Din-Gabisi” showcases how she uses her lyricism and vision to educate and promote the divine feminine, black girl magick and how we are a force to be reckoned with. Her lyrics are powerful,

“Magical, umbilical my universe is radical, Introduce the nation to embracing what is factual Feminine energy almost mathematical You can’t really sum up what is infinite and valuable….”

Queen, Sampa the Great, emphasizes the importance of embracing our feminine energy and strength. So, blast this in your room or in your car because this song is THE mantra for this month and ultimately all of 2019! While you are at it check out her older stuff because Sampa The Great will not disappoint, it’s in the name.

What is Hocus Pocus?

You may all be wondering, what in the cosmos is Hocus Pocus?

Hocus Pocus is your local astrological newsletter. We follow the signs of the zodiac and provide you witches and warlocks with clues to the universe via gossip, crystals, melodies, brew, and more!

The idea spawned in the hellfire’s of Athens, Georgia by a Capricorn witch who decided it was time to spread the word of the zodiac. She gathered a couple witches from her coven and asked them to contribute a couple pieces. The ambitious Capricorn brewed all their works together and formed the first Hocus Pocus Newsletter.

You can catch a few printed copies around the town of Athens, Georgia. Each newsletter has been personalized by the detail-oriented Capricorn with hot glue, moss, glitter, and beads.
